There are few things to know before you proceed:

1. Not every hard drive failure is due to a bad PCB—only about 25-30% of data loss occurs due to failed electronic components. Even what seems to be an obvious sign of a PCB failure could be a completely different (often mechanical) issue. If time and data are important, consider sending us your hard drive for our diagnostics and PCB adaptation services.

The following instructions are for maximizing compatibility when looking for a donor head stack assembly. Be aware that there is no way to 100% guarantee a match, but following these guidelines will help you increase the chances of locating a successful donor.

Locate the make of hard drive you are working on, and then try to match the specs listed. Please note that we do not cover Quantum or very old Western Digital drives (pre-Caviar) here. For any information visible on the label, we have highlighted where you can find that in the accompanying example label for each type. Your label may look different, depending on the date or the product line that the drive belongs to.

We have prioritized and color coded each aspect. Chances are, you won't be able to find a donor that matches all of these specs, but using the color-coding you can see which information is more important.

Since it is most likely that a donor is not 100% compatible, we have prioritized the parameters, as follows:

Red - Essential. You can not use a donor without matching this number.

Orange - High priority. Many times it is required to achieve compatibility.

Yellow - Less priority. This information can improve the chance of compatibility if it is available.

Green - Low priority. These data usually do not affect anything but they serve when you are choosing between several units.

Western Digital

Caviar 1st Edition

These discs usually have more than 10 years. They can be differentiated because they have a rather square PCB (current PCBs are L-shaped).

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number (or MDL) : The first part must match and at least the three characters indicated in red of the second part must match. For example: WD800BB -55 JKA 0

Heads Map : Must have exactly the same map of physical heads (PH Column - Physical Heads). Only if the patient has more space (plates) to support more heads can the donor have more heads than are required (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools).

DCM : Locate the J or 2 in the DCM (it is towards the end of the value). At least one must ensure that the J or 2 plus the previous character match. For example: HSBHN TJ AH.

Country of Manufacture : Must be the same.

Date of manufacture : Should not be more than three months apart (the closer the better).

Serial Number : The first four digits must match.

PCB Revision : Must be the same.

Marvell (version 1)

These devices can be identified by the Code Family in the model number (it is the third and fourth digit after the middle script). The following families are of this type: Mammoth (family codes: EY, EZ, FA, FC, FJ, FM, HE, JE, JS, JT, JY); Saber (JH, JJ, JK, JL, JM, JN, JP, JU, KS, LN, MG); Hawk (MH, MJ, MK, ML, MV, MW, MY, MZ, NC, ND, NE, NF, NG, NH, NJ, NK, NT, NV, NY, PA); Hawk-2 (SG, SH, TG); Starling (RD, RE, RF, RJ, RK, RL); Bucaneer (KE, KF, KG, KM); Zeus (MN, MP, VJ); and Raider (PC, PD, PE, PF, PG). Even if these families say Caviar SE on the label, they belong to the Marvell architecture.

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number (or MDL) : Would be ideal if the whole number matches; but if you can not find one that matches at least the first part and the three digits indicated in red of the second part. For example: WD1600JB -40 TGB 0

Heads Map : Must have exactly the same map of physical heads (PH Column - Physical Heads). Only if the patient has more space (plates) to support more heads can the donor have more heads than are required (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools).

DCM : Locate the J or 2 in the DCM (it is towards the end of the value). At least one must ensure that the J or 2 plus the previous character match. If the first 4 characters precedent to the J or 2 match is better since you will have a better chance of being compatible.

Date of manufacture : Should not be more than three months apart (the closer the better).

Preamplifier : The Preamp Vendor and Preamp revision must match (these values can only be obtained with specialized tools).

Microjogs : Each MicroJobs value should not differ by more than 300, the closer it is the better (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools).

Country of Manufacture : Must match.

Marvell (version 2)

These are the newest models from Western Digital.

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number (or MDL) : Would be ideal if the whole number matches; but if you can not find one that matches at least the first part and the three digits indicated in red of the second part. For example: WD1200BEVT -22 A23 T0

Heads Map : Must have exactly the same map of physical heads (PH Column - Physical Heads). Only if the patient has more space (plates) to support more heads can the donor have more heads than are required (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools). DCM : Locate the J or 2 in the DCM (it is towards the end of the value). At least one must ensure that the J or 2 plus the previous character match. If the first 4 characters precedent to the J or 2 match is better since you will have a better chance of being compatible. Preamplifier : The Preamp Vendor and Preamp revision must match (these values can only be obtained with specialized tools). Microjogs : Each value of MicroJobs should not differ by more than 200, the closer it is the better (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools). Country of Manufacture : Must match. These disks can be identified by having a period (.) In the firmware number.

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number : Must match.

Heads Map : Must have exactly the same map of physical heads. It is okay if the donor has more heads but all the heads mentioned above must match (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools).

Serial Number : The second and third character of the serial number must match.

Firmware : Optional - For units with series 7 or above the whole number must match.

Serial Number : The second and third character of the serial number must match, and it is best if the first character also matches.

Site Code : Must match (indicates place of manufacture).

Part Number (P / N) : The first part must match, and it is better if the second part also matches.

These disks do NOT contain a dot (.) In the Firmware.

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number : Must match.

Heads Map : Must have exactly the same map of physical heads. It is okay if the donor has more heads but all the heads

Preamplifier type : Optional - At least the first two digits must match.

Part Number (P / N) : The first part must match, and it is better if the second part also matches.

Site Code : Match the site code. This indicates the location of manufacture.

Date Code : It should not be more than three months apart (the closer it gets better).

Old Models

These units can be identified by having at the bottom of the bar code label two sets of numbers.

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number : Must match.

Heads Map : Must have exactly the same map of physical heads. It is okay if the donor has more heads but all the heads mentioned above must match (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools).

P / V : It is located at the bottom left of the barcode label. On some labels this value does not appear.

Country of Manufacture : Must match.

PCB Revision : Must match.

New Models

These are the 2.5-inch disks, the M7S2 series, M7E (for example Mercury / Rev .07 / S3M), MP4, MT2, M8E, and M9T, as well as 3.5-inch disks, F3 series or later. This may be printed on the label or on the back of the PCB side.

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number : Must match.

Heads Map : Must have exactly the same map of physical heads. It is okay if the donor has more heads but all the heads mentioned above must match (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools).

Preamplifier : At least VID (Vendor ID) and PN (Part Number) values must match, but it is very convenient to also agree Rev (Revision) and PA values (these values can only be obtained with specialized tools).

Part Number : The first four values should match.

Platform Id : Required for hot sawp and PCB replacements (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools).

Hitachi / IBM

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number : Must match.

Part Number : Must match.

Heads Map : Must have exactly the same map of physical heads. It is okay if the donor has more heads but all the heads mentioned above must match (this value can only be obtained with specialized tools).

MLC : It must match.

Date of manufacture : Should not be more than three months apart (the closer the better).

Toshiba

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number : It is best to match completely, if that is not possible, at least the first eight digits of the Model Number and the Family Code must match .

Country of Manufacture : Must match.

Hard drive code : The first part must match.

Maxtor

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number : Must match.

Four-letter code : The 1st and 3rd digit are the most important. If the 2nd and 4th digit also match is better.

Date of manufacture : Should not be more than three months apart (the closer the better).

Fujitsu

Use the following criteria to find a donor.

Model Number : Must match.
